How To Remove A Mirror From The Wall Without Making A Mess Or Purchasing Expensive Tools

A bathroom mirror is mounted to the wall. You want to replace it. However, you don't see any clips and fasteners to hold it in place. What should you do? What should you do? But that doesn't make it impossible.

These are the three ways to take off a mirror that has been glued to the wall.

Method 1: Heat and Pyre

To remove a glued mirror, you will need to use a putty knife or sturdy drywall, a drop cloth or heavy canvas, and a heat gun. They are more affordable than blow dryers and can melt adhesive better. Heat guns are the best choice.

Spread your drop cloth and then heat the mirror with the heat gun. Start by focusing on one corner at a time. You can slide the putty knives underneath the mirror as you heat it. You should feel the glue begin to soften. Keep heating the glue and prying with a putty knife until you feel the mirror is free.

This is a good way to cover the mirror in case it breaks. You can melt the adhesive with a heat gun and tape.

Method 2: Use a wire saw

A wire saw is the best tool to use to remove stick-on mirrors. You will need a drop cloth, a long-handled wire saw that can fit behind the mirror, and perhaps a helper. Use the saw to remove the adhesive by working behind the mirror.

If you have someone to assist you and you are using a wire saw with rings to help pull it (instead of a wire saw with a wooden handle), you can ask your helper for one ring to pull while you pull the second. This will make it a lot easier.

However, a wire saw is the most difficult and time-consuming method. This is due to the slow cutting process and the fact that the wire saw can clog with adhesive. You will need to clean it often.

Method 3: Break the Mirror

This is the best way to remove a glued mirror from your bathroom. However, it can also be the most dangerous and destructive. A hammer, safety glasses, and leather gloves are all you will need. You also need a drop cloth, duct tape, putty knife, and safety glasses. To catch any broken glass, spread the drop cloth and then put on your gloves and safety glasses. To capture broken glass, you can either cover the mirror with duct tape completely or place duct tape every few inches to make cleanup much easier.

After you are prepared, you can start to strike the mirror with the hammer. You should be able to crack it enough to break it, but not enough to damage the drywall underneath. Use the putty knife as a tool to remove any pieces that are still stuck to the wall.

How to Prepare for Your New Mirror

No matter what method you choose, the mirror will most likely cause damage to the wall behind it. This is often just adhesive remnants. In this case, you'll need to learn how to remove bathroom mirror adhesive. You could also cause damage or scarring to the drywall, especially if the mirror was broken with a hammer.

You can replace the mirror with a larger or smaller mirror by making sure the wall is smooth enough to allow the mirror to rest flush against the wall. This can often be done by using your putty knives to remove any glue residue.

You will need to repair the drywall. Use sandpaper to smoothen the drywall. Next, you will need to get some joint compound or spackling and the appropriately sized spackle knives (larger for large holes or severe damage, narrower for small holes), and then use these spackle knives to smoothen out spackle into cracks and holes.

Let the spackle dry. You may notice shrinkage in the spackle when it dries on larger jobs. You can apply another coat and continue the process until you have a smooth surface. To create a smooth texture, use a drywall sander and remove any spackle. You can then prime, paint, and install a mirror.

Attach the mirror to a hook or clip when you are ready to hang it. If necessary, it should be easier to take out. This is how to remove mirrors that have been fastened with clips.
